Editorial research

Where did Toc Toc Dance come from?

The song is "Toc toc" by French entertainer Patrick Sébastien, released in 2015; its hook is "Toc toc, on frappe à ma porte" (knock knock, someone's at my door). The dance is a one-foot hop straight at the phone that ends with both fists knocking twice at the lens.

20 Minutes and RTL credit TikTok creator Nooah Prvv (@noah_prvv_) with starting the dance, though neither names a specific video. The earliest clip on that account where the Toc Toc lyric can be heard is from August 13, 2026 (about 6.1 million views by mid-October); a September 13 clip added about 3.8 million more. That this is the very first Toc Toc video is our inference.

The AI wave began in late September. A September 30 TikTok by @jeancultouw, a deadpan group of dancers in bob wigs and brown suits, had about 9.5 million views by October 14. The look borrows from Jean Phil, an AI-made French persona whose account started on September 17; Jean Phil himself does not do the dance. CapCut templates then made it a one-photo format.

Why did Toc Toc Dance take off?

It is easy to read. One person hops at the camera, knocks and leaps out, and the next one does it again, so the joke lands even with the sound off.

The AI versions added a costume gag. Straight faces under identical bob wigs and 70s suits look absurd in a normal living room, and swapping in a friend's face makes it personal.

The song is an old French party track that most of the world was hearing for the first time, and the knock lands right on the lyric.

How people play Toc Toc Dance

1. You and a friend, twice each

Two photos fill four dancers, so each of you takes two turns at the lens in a different wig.

2. Office or group-chat version

Cast two coworkers or two friends who would never dance and post it to the group. Ask them first.

3. Not the same as

Jean Phil is the AI persona whose look the trend borrows; his own videos are shadowboxing clips, not this dance.
