Where did Ghost Filter Prank come from?

The ghost in the prank comes from a TikTok effect called "kuntilanak behind", named after a female ghost from Indonesian folklore. It lays a ghost with long grey hair, huge white eyes, a wide grin and clawed hands behind whoever is on camera. More than a million TikTok videos use it.

The prank is simple: film someone with the effect on, then turn the screen to them. The wave took off in early October 2026. South African TikToker @malcolm_fkn_wentzel's prank on his family's nanny, Thembi, reached about 342,000 plays and was covered by Briefly News, and another South African clip, of a grandmother who took the ghost for a tokoloshe and tried to bargain with it, spread the same week.

By October 16, 2026, #ghostprank had about 8,900 videos and 309 million views, #ghostfilter about 4,600 videos and 90 million, and the new #ghostsfiltereffect about 3,400 videos and 55 million. It is a different trend from the Ghostface filter, which is about the Scream mask.

Why did Ghost Filter Prank take off?

The payoff is a real scream: the reaction is the whole video.

The ghost looks solid and lit like the room, so it is genuinely creepy for a second.

It takes one tap of an effect, which made it an easy October prank to copy.
