What does "I Hate Gay Halloween Meme" mean?
The gay Halloween meme is a yearly joke in which LGBTQ+ people post "I hate gay Halloween" and then show a costume so specific that only someone deep in queer internet culture would recognize it, like Anne Hathaway's loom in The Odyssey or the fire that burned down the Library of Alexandria. The "hate" is ironic: it is a brag about how clever the costumes are. It started on X in October 2022 and 2023, and in October 2026 it came back again, with roundups from BuzzFeed on October 20 and Instinct and Considerable on October 22.

- •KYM: X posts in 2022/2023 come first; Tumblr example is 2023-10-28[source]
- •Brief framing: stunning, lavish costumes
- •KYM/BuzzFeed: the point is how obscure and specific the reference is (objects, ads, meme photos), not luxury[source]
